I am looking for discussion on e-discovery.
I am an experienced, degreed paralegal who also has a bachelors degree in Information Technology, specifically, information systems security. E-Discovery is easy to me!! The thing is, no one I know has any clue. Even the attorneys I know (all of them) continue to ignore the subject, still thinking that ( if ) it even comes-up for one of their clients, let-alone their own organizations, "undue burden or cost" is going to save them. The local Bar Association has sponsored E-Discovery CLE's and programs for all support personnel, however, even attendees that I have questioned still have no clue. In Google Groups there are 6 or 7 groups with "E-Discovery" either in the name of the group or in the description of the topics of the group, yet, NO DISCUSSION IS TO BE HAD. ???
Question(s): Is it that people think legal 'interpretation' is required to speak of e-discovery? or, Is it that there are no legal support people out there that are knowledgeable on e-discovery, and the attorneys that are knowledgeable are too busy ? or, Is it that because very few attorneys are discussing e-discovery, their support personnel haven't yet worried about the subject ( being already overworked and underpaid ) ??
E-Discovery strategy will require legal advise; E-Discovery 'response' will require legal interpretation and decision.
But e-discovery 'readiness', e-discovery knowledge, and e-discovery possibilities do not require legal advise. THERE IS SO MUCH HERE, for so many involved other than the attorneys, that I can't understand why there is no discussion. . . .
Is it that maybe I am just ahead of others?
Ohhhh, the earnings potential here !!! Does anybody know any investors who understand e-discovery, or at least the requirements to start learning e-discovery??
If others participate (so that it is not just me giving away all my knowledge), I would participate:
As support personnel, I know that we all need to know and understand the 'basics'. In my mind, 'the basics' means exactly what is actually 'required', which is that individuals and organizations must have "a defensible process and foundation". -From which to respond to e-discovery.
The same considerations regarding normal 'paper' discovery must be considered, PLUS the additional considerations enumerated for electronically stored information. <-- There are lists !!
Doesn't any one care?
Thanks,
Chris Jacobs

I am residing on the East Coast, Melbourne, Florida. In this job market I am trying to make myself more valuable and therefore more marketable to larger size law firms in Florida. The greater Tampa Bay area, specifically. I've read so many articles on LinkedIn indicating E-Discovery is THE future (which is already here) in Litigation. Having worked in smaller towns who don't understand the value of E-Discovery and getting frustrated from this, I am now networking to see how I can cross-train into working with an E-Discovery company as a trainer or in tech support in hopes of safeguarding my value to an AV rated firm.
Any feedback on this is appreciated.

I am really surprised no one has any idea in a metro area like Tampa. Check out LinkedIn.com's ILTA (International Legal Technology Association) group and the association web site. BushRoss, a huge law firm in Tampa, has a technologist who belongs to ILTA. If any of the attorney reviewed the Fed Rules re: Electronic Discovery, it would be obvious, I woulid think.
I have fifteen years of Paralegal experience and am now thinking that in this economy just being a paralegal makes you more expendable than a litigation technology support person/tech, and am looking into crossing over into that field at some point.

Dear Cgraham:
Sorry so long to respond to your post. As it happened, I got married in November, then went on a honeymoon cruise Dec. 13th.
I agree with your comment about making yourself more valuable to a firm\less likely to be the one laid off. Personally, my route to where I am was also through a desire to make myself more valuable. I went back to college to learn about computers, obtained an Associate degree in networking systems, decided I liked the field, then continued for a Bachelors in information systems security. Currently I am enrolled in a masters program in information systems management.
As an experienced litigation and business paralegal I have been quite familiar with the Rules of Procedure at both the State and Federal levels for many years. With my understandings about computer and network systems and file creation, storage, access and manipulation, I recognized early-on that I could help most in a cost prevention \ client liason position, but what I experienced in my initial quest to become employed in an e-discovery function was that the office manager (usually the front person in the hiring process) never knew anything about e-discovery and so copped an attitude towards me because I knew something that she\he did not, and so my efforts were cut short, and the attorneys who were "doing it" were always too busy to talk to me (reviewing files, etc) to find out where I could help them most, so the few e-discovery "jobs" I got hired to help with were very limited in scope. The firms \ attorneys that I encountered were not yet comfortable enough with the field to allow a non-attorney to be that involved in much else.
As an entreprenuer, though, I have been able to get to those attorneys, who talk to other attorneys.
