| Hi. I am contemplating going to an online paralegal school. Actually, I am thinking about a few, and I need to decide between them. One has regional accreditation, and two have national accreditation. I have read that regional accreditation is superior to national accreditation and that you should pick a school with regional accreditation if possible. Does anyone have any information on this subject? Thanks in advance for any advice.

| MissLeslie, as an attorney hiring paralegals, I am going to be more interested in what a paralegal knows, his or her personality, work ethic, etc., than anything else. However, that being said, I will also take a close look at the school where my employee earned his or her certification. (We no longer hire uncertified paralegals, by the way.) The best schools, it is well known, are regionally accredited, just as you have stated. There are some national accreditations that are "ok" but in general, we prefer to hire from schools that have regional accreditation. If you check it out, the best universities such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, etc., all have regional accreditation. That should tell you just about everything you need to know right there. Good luck, MissLeslie! Last edited on Fri Jun 16th, 2006 04:55 pm by JHarlanAtty

I did a little research on this. It looks like the regional accreditation is the best. For instance, Middle States Commission, (MSA) which is a regional accreditor, accredits Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania, United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, United States Military Academy at West Point, Columbia University, State University of New York, and many other top schools.
MSA is also the accrediting agency of Washington Online Learning Institute (WOLI).

| I also checked ACCET, a national accrediting agency, which accredits another online paralegal school, to see what other schools they accredit. If you check ACCET's website you will see they accredit Deep Muscle Therapy School, Metro Auto Electronics Training Institute, Inc., and Commercial Driving Academy, among other similar type schools. It seems to me there is world of difference between them and MSA, Middle States, which accredits world famous and prestigious schools like Princeton University, West Point, Columbia University and others. You just can not compare the two types of accreditation in my opinion. Last edited on Fri Jun 16th, 2006 04:48 pm by ActivLegalPro

| Hi MIssLeslie. Here is a link that will take you to a list of regional accrediting agencies. You can be sure that any school that is accredited by one of these regional accrediting agencies is going to be excellent. http://www.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/accreditation_pg7.html

| I wasn't really too sure about accreditation standards. I don't think most people really know the differences. There are a lot of phony and second rate accreditating agencies, so.... Thank you for posting this information. When you think about it, even if you want distance learning there is no reason to accept a lower level accreditation since you now have online schools achieving regional accreditation. Not true of correspondece schools, however. If you research the subject, you will find that a degree or certificate with regional accreditation goes a lot farther in the job market. Since the degree or certificate you earn is with you the rest of your life and will always be your credential, you should get one that is regionally accredited. It does come up in interviews and it gives you more security to have a certificate from a regionally accredited school.

| You don't need a western accrediting agency. You should look for a regional agency and it can be from anywhere. They are all equally good. Middle States is one of the six regional agencies. So it one of the very best and highest ranking accrediting agencies in the country. The six best are each called regional, and they are based in different parts of the country, but they are equaly good and apply to the whole country especially for online schools.

| I think the way it works is that if a school is regionally accredited they are eligible for Stafford loans and Pell grants. WOLI, from what I remember, was not accepting those at the time but they were beginning the process. Someone from my office also goes to WOLI now and she says they will be starting soon with Pell grants and Stafford loans.

| Washington Online is definitely regionally accredited. That is, of course, the highest level of accreditation. Well deserved, from what I have heard.

| My girlfriend is contemplating WOLI, and this is just another reason she is strongly considering it. Thanks!
